Oct. 27th, 2005 04:43 pmI'm back. My mother's surgery was scheduled and cancelled three times before she had a successful 4-hour back surgery. She goes home from the infirmary today, actually. I've taken my small claims case to court and won the battle but lost the war, although I am advised by the small claims clerk to write a letter to the commissioner asking for clarification of something that is very not clear in her decision. The reorganization at work proceeds apace. I shall soon have to apply for the spin-off part of my current job that I want, that'll be a promotion for me.
Books read:
The Secret Life of Bees, Sue Monk Kidd. I resisted reading this, figuring who needs another "magical Negro" book, but when it was right there in books on CD and so many friends had said they really liked it, I tried it. I *loved* it. It is another perfect marriage of reader to material and one of the best on tape/CD.
The Girl in the Flammable Skirt, Aimee Bender. I've been reading glowing reviews about Aimee Bender's incandescent, otherworldly prose, and they're right. Her stories are beautifully written and rather hallucinagenic.
The last 5-6 weeks, I've not read much nor even been able to keep up with Tivo. I'm bumping up against the maximum storage in my Tivo and so will be catching up soon. I did work my way through most of last year's Arrested Development, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I hope it manages to stick around for a few more seasons. We have an office pool on Survivor and Amazing Race and I'm told my randomly-drawn team for AR of the Linz' is doing very well. I haven't seen any eps yet.
Serenity was great fun. Caught it last weekend. I want to see In Her Shoes. I loved the book, and I read somewhere that studio execs are starting to think twice about funding chick flicks. Well heck, it stars 3 strong women, is based on a book by a woman, and gets great reviews to boot. I'm going to vote at the box office soon, like this weekend, for my choice of more movies with smart, strong women characters. Do the same if you feel the same!
