Sep. 7th, 2005 01:49 pmI'm still thinking about that kerfuffle about some fic writer who asked others if they'd chip in financially to help her write her fic. I read about 4 pages-worth of LJ posts before leaving it, and I haven't been back. It was one of the more horrifying things I've seen happen in my few years on the Internet; the first one that really shocked me was saguaro going after Elena in B'cy on b.org. Allyson going off on me because I dared to say out loud that people were being rude to Beej is another. Then Cindy going off on me again because I talked back to Allyson, well, hell, people *were* being rude to Beej. I'm not gonna back down on that. And others. Anyway.
In this kerfuffle about fic, most of the people were just horrible, coming after that women with knives, stones, hanging rope and happy to vent their worst vitriol on her. Thank dog for cofax7, who had some really good comments on the first page of the kerfuffle, as did a few other cooler heads, but the rest of it was seriously disturbing.
I don't get why it seems acceptable for the people with the knives to go after other people on the internet. It's not just that kerfuffle, it's Allyson and saguaro and others at b.org and other instances. It's violent and vicious -- and then this is what really gets me -- it's tolerated as The Way It Is On The Internet.
I'm appalled. And then I'm appalled that not more of you are also saying you are appalled. If I saw someone kicking a dog in the street, or someone being hit, or another type of violence, I'd damn well do something about it, and stop it to the best of my ability. If I couldn't, I'd damn well be saying something LOUD about it.
This stuff, this violence that goes on, doesn't seem too removed from any other of abuse to me. Why on earth is it accepted on the Internet? I'm not entirely sure I really want to invite a debate. I guess what I want to say is, it's not okay WITH ME. If I EVER see anything like that happen to ANYONE I know or who is being buried in an onslaught of hatred, I'm speaking up. It's not okay with me. Period.
