Jun. 2nd, 2004 10:07 amI'm sleeping at my neighbors' house while my floors are being done. We arranged this a long time ago, so they have gone on vacation. These are the same neighbors whom I adore whose house so inspired me last July. Actually staying there, I'm seeing things I hadn't before. The shower has two heads the size of sunflowers. The shower stall is almost as big as my bathroom. One of my chores? Picking and eating ripe raspberries every morning.
I have a lot of junk, some of it treasures, some of it just stuff I needed at a certain time. I still hark back to living in LA and the day of pouring rain when I couldn't afford to buy a $5 umbrella that would last awhile, and had to get a $2 umbrella (forget about the $25 umbrella that would last until you lost it). It's time to get over it. I notice that everything in my neighors' house is chosen with care and is beautiful. Where I put newspaper rubber bands into a green plastic strawberry basket and twist ties and plastic ties into a tiny Italian olive oil can with the lid cut off on my off-white tile counter, they have two bronze containers with lids on their copper counter.
Some of it is pure economics and I can't compete, ever. They completed a huge remodel several years ago. Alot of it is taste & style. I need to get rid of my junk, even where I have a sentimental memory of being with someone or having some experience at the time I acquired it, or being given it by someone. The neighborhood yard sale is coming up in a few weeks. It might be the perfect opportunity.
