Maybe there's something to that Gemini crap.
Backpacking cut
I'm having a hard time making up my mind as usual: Lake Tahoe, Desolation Wilderness; or Pinecrest Lake, Emigrant Wilderness. State park or backpack. Or both. Both wilderness areas, backpack AND state park. Yesterday, I was going to do exactly what *I* wanted to do (Emigrant, for the latte before the backpack and the Greek salad, cold white wine & shower after the backpack). Now I'm not sure.
Now I remember that the fun is hanging out with my compadres. Slounging, reading, swimming, trading books. P. with the magnifying glass. Me with the compass. M and his dog. Massages. P hiding C's clothes while she was swimming. The fish we rescued from drying pools; the net we made from a ditty bag, safety pins and sticks. K and I having to go back 2 months later for the bear barrel I didn't know P hid under a tree. Those afternoons in the meadow, mmmmm. That year was the most Magical of them all.
Also whatever brings an adrenaline blip: the coyote pack at night one year, the howls finally gathering at the mouth of the meadow; being separated/lost for almost 15 minutes without any gear at all - me! Ms. Be Prepared!- when P and I free-climbed our way out of the canyon after going cross country by topo; the windy night when the rain fly ties scraped fingernails on the tent all night long; mild hypothermia from swimming the circumferance of the lake without stopping and sunning, then napping inside our sleeping bags in the sun & warming.
If the others want to be closer to Tahoe, eh, okay, as long as there's a lake and we're still in the tree line. I like that ~8,000 foot zone, right on the border of Granite, Alpine Lake & Tree. I wonder what the bear sitch is at Desolation. There are no bears in Emigrant, practically speaking. It's the cows, herds meandering, all with Heidi cow bells; their humans kill the coyotes and bears.
Maybe I can do both Emigrant and Desolation. Maybe I should go to a state park at Tahoe and not backpack at all.
Maybe I should go home.
