I'm going to bury the lead again.
Last week was alternately great and sucked. I went to my former big boss' daughter's wedding in the Santa Cruz mts. last Sunday; had a great time. My former big boss has been fighting cancer (and refusing to publicly acknowledge that he has cancer) since 1981. He can barely talk normally any more, he's had so many medical procedures on his neck/throat. I teared up seeing him beaming, walking his charming and smart daughter down the hillside. The dinner was a blast. I danced with the former Exec Dir and Deputy Exec Dir of our agency (now that we are all retirees!) plus some of former big boss' relatives. Fun. Snotty criticism: the wedding cake wasn't very good. Seriously, they spent so much money on the wedding, the finish of the cake should have been delicious.
I invited a friend who needed a break to share the hotel room with me that night, then we both went to New Brighton State Beach. She didn't stay over the second night, but we had a nice time walking and talking on the beach before she took off and I had a pretty good time that night and the next day. Not for the first or last time, I felt so grateful and lucky to live on the left coast. It is such a wonderful thing to be able to drive a short distance away and be camping near the ocean and walking on the beach. Plus, Capitola? Fun, and it's almost worth a drive just to go to Gayle's. Gayle was the pastry chef at Chez Panisse, then left and opened her own place in Capitola. It's now a bakery-deli-cafe-restaurant, from a small bakery, I mean. YUM.
The rest of the week sucked. Well, except for going to Mt. Diablo to watch for meteors. I had SO MUCH FUN that night, but staying up until 5 AM? Wrecked me for days.
So the lead: I finally got out of my slump and walked over to Mom's tonight. She was herself again! YAY!! I got there after her dinner and before her bedtime, and we were able to go over the draft codicil that we've been putting over going over for 1.5 years, and go over all the various powers of attorney, health and financial. She was sharp and with it and funny and cranky and OMG it was just really really great to have my mother back again. I really was mourning her, even though she was here, just not fully herself.
YAY. Next: finish the codicil or rewrite the will.
FInancially-irresponsible sister arrives from Mexico, where she lives now, this Wed., with two dogs that she is rescuing. Localistas, if you want a dog, let me know and I'll forward details.
