Treasure Hunters
Jul. 18th, 2006 12:45 pmOne person where I work is really into creating office pools, and I've won $10 or so here and there participating. The odds are very good, and the pools are based on a random draw of names, so for better or worse, there's no skill involved. She started a pool for Treasure Hunters, and there's such a lack of interest, 6 of us decided to go ahead just because half of us will win something. I finally caught the show last night.
It isn't very good. Phil Keoghan and Jeff Probst have charisma and are very good narrators of their show. Laird Macintosh is the host of this one and he's cold and borderline nasty in that "Weakest Link" school of reality show hosting, only, worse, we never see him in person (1-on-1 with the camera) or anywhere near the action. He gives instructions to contestants via cell phone, and we watch him on the cell phone over someone's shoulder. I have no idea if he's the narrator or not; I can't remember any interesting narration, actually. The lack of good narration and a host who rather makes you want to turn the show off when he's on are the biggest drawbacks.
I like the premise that the contestants have to do more than figure out how to get from Point A to Point B to Point C, and some of the history of the underground railroad that came with last night ep (and Europe next week). The top teams (Air Force, ex-CIA are top leaders) seem interesting enough, but the teams also seem wildly mismatched. 3 Air Force people against the 3 very overweight and out of shape Brown family members? Come on! The editing is pretty good, though they have a slight tendancy to replay "villian" clips past making their point (I really didn't need to see Kayte wailing and complaining *repeatedly* last night. I got it the first time. She can leave any time now.)
But really, it makes me appreciate The Amazing Race and Survisor all the more. I'll watch now and then if I'm home and there's nothing else to do and I can stand live TV for that long.
