I've been actually gardening lately, as opposed to wanting to garden and talking about gardening, but not actually doing it. which I do all too often. After a "down day" last Sat., during which I watched Tivo and not  much else, I awoke at 5:30 AM, rarin' to go. I thought about lapswimming, and hiking, and chose gardening. I'm not very good at planting things, but I very much enjoy weeding and hacking at things. Luckily, thrice-former-roommate & friend Jane has always enjoyed coming to my house to plant things, which she likes more than anything else. Bonus: she just finished the Master Gardener program. So, there are things that others have planted that I can weed and hack at.  I decided last year to concentrate on the front of the house, specifically the median strip between the street and the sidewalk, the three small areas between the driveway and the stairs to the front door.

So: sedum finally in the ground, pineapple sage finally  transplanted, the red cannas in the ground, too, though they haven't peeped a bit. I finally have reached an accord with neighbor across street and got him to move 2 cars so I could clean up median there. The mallow is blooming. Turns out that Watsonia is The Best Bulb (Korm?) EVEH and I want more.  I have fortnight lily babies all over, thanks to seed scattering last year, and have to move those at least by the end of summer. I didn't keep the packets, but I had fabulous bulbs this spring - fabiola, I think, and scyllia? have to look up name.

The obediance plant is dying, some kind of leaf curl disease. I need to hack at the budlia more, it's blocking light to the vitex, which is looking great, thanks to neighbor D helping me prune it last winter. My transplants of Alaska shastas are coming in nicely. The day lilies are not doing a thing. Dunno why, not enough sun, maybe? MAN the crocosmia is taking over. I ripped out some more. Jane planted seeds in the back, next to  my BR window, and some shasta daisies are sprouting. I was busy ripping out what looked like papyrus shoots, only, then I thought better of it. I have a call in to Jane to see what else she seeded there. Maybe it's something cool. The plumbago at the top of the stairs is doing well. I need to plant some more lavendar, even though it's the wrong time of year to plant  there.

5:30 - 4:00 gardening, with a break to visit J&M and L&J neighbors up the street, and make myself  scrambled eggs at noon for brunch = one tired java catnthat night. With a very sore back the next day, ouch. Oh, and Java got nicely tired out, bonus. He's a good companion - followed me around everywhere, just keeping an eye on things.
