Dec. 27th, 2005 12:23 pmHooray, thanks to my library allowing one to keep book reserve records for a calendar year, I've been reminded of a book I read that wasn't on my list. So, that plus Hoot, by Carl Hiassen, brings me to 46 books read this year.
Hoot was a hoot - it's his first YA book and has all the things one can expect from Hiassen, minus the kinky sex, profanity, and outrageously gross and funny violence in his adult novels: passionate defense of the Florida environment, a smart, slightly-outsider protagonist who finds other cool, smart outsider friends to help his quest to save [something - burrowing owls in this one], one person who's completely an outlaw in the best possible way (a kid this time; sad, but you never doubt that he'll survive), and crisp, fast-moving, funny writing. I enjoy his descriptions of Florida, and spent enough time there in my youth (maternal and paternal grandparents retired there) and young adulthood (two boyfriends from the state) to enjoy the reminder of the firsthand knowledge I have of the state, its parks, beaches, swamps, etc.
Since Hoot's the only book I managed to read over the holidays, umm, it's looking grim for 50 books in 2005. We'll see. The YAs go pretty fast.
Oh dear. I just looked down and discovered dried cat snot on my shirt. Great. Ben's nostril is acting up again and it must've gotten on me this AM while he was trying to avoid the dreaded squirting of antibiotics in his mouth. Oh well. I hope no one else noticed. Notices. It'll be worse to walk around with a giant wet spot over my boob, I suspect.
I swear, there are about a dozen people at work today, total, out of ~130, with 75% of my department here. Grr!
