"Hello, and thanks for visiting! My name is Pete Behmer, and
I put together this website to document my thru-hike of the Pacific Crest Trail from May to October, 2005."
It's one of my favorite sites. This summer, I'm spending my vacation time in 2-4 day stints at a charming beach house instead of backpacking (hard lot, I know), and I'm loving the armchair traveling. His travel journal is so *complete* and well done. Maps, data on weather, and succinct travel writeups. The people on the John Muir trail yahoogroup are using the weather data he's compiled.

"The most important techno gadgets are the laptop and satellite phone. I use these to update this website directly from the trail, and as far as I know, nobody's ever done dispatches from the PCT quite like this. I use a Panasonic Toughbook laptop (Model CF-W2). There are many models in the Toughbook line, and this one is about the lightest. I use a Qualcomm GSP-1600 satellite phone with a data cable to get connected to the internet. The connection is slow, of course, but it allows me to transfer text and images to my webserver. My service provider is Globalstar, and as long as I have a clear view of the sky, I've been able to get a fairly solid connection even in the middle of nowhere."
I must send this guy some cookies to his next bounce site as thanks.
