Sep. 20th, 2004 10:21 amThis was a camping weekend at New Brighton State Beach. We made our reservations for it on Feb. 1 because that's what you have to do to get a campsite there. The campground was closed all last year for renovations. They took down a bunch of non-native pines, planted natives including oaks, put new roofs with eaves on the bathrooms, and added one road/row of sites. Otherwise, it seems much the same.
It was a very small group. We had fun. I came late, intentionally, because of the sick cat, and walked down the beach to Soquel/Aptos, which is farther than I've walked before. I *love* Aptos. The fair was fun - I did my bit to fuel the economy, even though I hadn't planned to do that. One necklace, a periwinkle plate, and two German small plastic carry-alls in which to put magazines. Oh, and a new print.
K was relieved to not have to do the Thursday grab-the-site thing. C&A did the honors this year. This was the end of A's camping virginity, as he put it. He did really well. I was relieved to not be the bringer of supplies. I can't believe the effort I used to put into this thing. I guess it paid off, I mean, we used to have around 30-35 people come to this, but my clean up and unloading the car? minimal, compared to the days it used to take to get everything cleaned and put away. Not sure what we'll do next year. I'd rather have been rafting and camping, all things considered.
