Admin. Day

Apr. 21st, 2004 03:17 pm
Today is Administrative Support Day, or some such new name, now avoiding the term "Secretary's Day." For some reason I'm not clear on, it's become A Really Big Deal at work. I'm the highest level admin, but still an admin. Everyone except me seem to have received an extravagent gift/thank you.

Well, one of the other admins. sent me an ecard because she felt sorry for me (she told me that). A manager from another section left a tiny chocolate cell phone and a nice note on my desk, though I notice she gave everyone else chocolates the size of a fist carved into a tulip or a tiger or a rose, nicely carved too, not the kind of thing I'd have done in girl scout camp with a bar of soap and a pen knife, you know? In the late morning, one of my bosses sent me an ecard consisting of a dog digging up a bone and then dropping the bone to say, thanks. It cracked me up, actually, throwing me a bone and all that. So I've gotten *some* things.

My childish misery is hugely self-created: back when the prevailing culture was for sectys. to be taken out to lunch by the people in their section, I asked my folks not to do it. At the time, the section consisted of 3 people including me and dinner once a year with F and M (in Dec.) was enough. Now that the culture has changed, I'm jealous! Wahh! You wouldn't believe what they're giving here - dozens of big long-stemmed roses arranged in gorgeous vases; tiers of rare-looking tulips and roses; tropicals mixed with roses. I feel left out everytime I walk down the hall!

Should I say something? Later, when I don't feel whiny and pathetic? Should I say, oh, that looked like fun? Oh, it turns out my prior snobbery about being included in sectretary's day doesn't apply when there are seriously nice gifts being passed out? it only applies to the tacky stuff? Am I really that terrible and greedy a person? I think I might be.

Found this in the course of work and wanted to put it here for reference. It looks like a good journalism resource.
