Only family Irish story
Mar. 17th, 2004 10:58 amMy grandfather's sister, Maude E. [last name] was born 3/16/1891 in Ireland, though British. Her father [my great-grandfather] was Lord Waterford's head horticulturist, as she used to say proudly, drawing up her 4'10" frame. (My sisters and I would look at each other later and say, right, so he was the head gardener. At any rate, they all knew the Latin & common name for just about every plant, and had Big Green Thumbs.) During the Irish potato famine, Lord W. ordered staff to shoot poachers. Her father refused, packed up his family, and went back to England. (Story via oldest sister, who is often an unreliable narrator, but I love the story.)
