Last weekend
Jul. 1st, 2003 09:12 pmMy favorite neighbors had an MFK Fisher-esque dinner last Friday. Well, S did; D was hiking/camping near Lake Tahoe with the Native Plant Society. Their house and garden is gorgeous. I keep saying that I'm going to write to Sunset mag to recommend their house as a feature on a fabulous remodel and one of these days I will. The side patio off the dining room feels like you're on the set of movie about a villa. It was the middle of the little heat wave so, balmy. There's a little knot of us who are invited at the same time, and new people this night, too. S suggested that I bring my mom along. She was thrilled. Said it was so much fun to be around young people, which made us laugh. I was the youngest person there; most were in their 50's and 60's.
S. cooked all day long, and she said she really had fun doing it. Menu: the appetizers were bought but from places around Monterey Market, so, unusual + v. good. Good wine. Gazpacho with shredded frozen cucumber and sorrel dollops on top. Salad. Pasta primavera. Anise drop cookies. Some fluffy whipped concoction. Coffee in this whimsical tea set that the Oakland Museum is trying to obtain rights to for their ceramics collection. Dark, dark chocolate that someone brought them from (Belgium or Switzerland) the week before. Bottles and bottles of good wine and fizzy water. It was just so lovely and fun, and stretched out over 5 hours!
I would like to enjoy my house the way they enjoy theirs. Obviously, they've sunk more into theirs than I'm capable of doing, but I'm predisposed to be happiest when I'm going away. If I work on it, surely I can cultivate enjoying being at home, and figure out a way to make the house be someplace I like to be. I think I used to, after H. and I finished remodeling. That was a long time ago and alot has happened since then. If I keep working at it, I think I can do it.
I wonder if this will post. I wonder if anyone will read it. I wonder if it's too long. I wonder how you put a linky thing and hide the long stuff. I wonder if I'm violating Buffista LJ community standards. I still haven't figured out how to add people as friends. DX and Laura emailed instructions (thanks!) to click on their icons, but that takes me to their LJs and then I'm lost. Eh, I'll figure it out in time.
