Belated (but easy) Friday Five - Beyond the pale
Updates: The shingles are getting better, although I'm still taking the meds, for if I do not, they remind me that they still hurt.
I thought of this many times over the weekend and wished I had a computer so I could list it all out --- JERICHO, man. I'm hooked but there are things that are so AGGRAVATING.
1. Favorite pastry? eclair
2. How do you like to waste time? reading, watching TV, surfing Internet
3. How would you describe your complexion? fair, with rosacea
4. What do you hang on to that you should really get rid of? I'm going with the short easy answer: some of the stuff in my garage
5. What is the last thing that made you hurt? shingles

My mother narrowly missed being hospitalized on Friday (mostly because of her age; she's 92/was born in 1915!), and instead is at home taking A Serious Antibiotic and recuperating from a sloshy right lung. She's a Christian Scientist - non-fanatical , but the tendency to wait out ailments is problematic at her age. On the other hand, it's perhaps partly why she's so spry and healthy in general. She plays bridge with a Gold Master regularly, does yoga a couple times a week, tromps up the stairs to my house, etc. So. On Friday, I decoded what she was saying and called her MD to have him phone her. It was a great way to deal with her, as opposed to dragging her to either his office or the Urgent Care center. She was cranky at me on Sat. when I came by to check on her, and apologized on Sunday, saying she recognized that I did the right thing. So that's good. I'm hoping she lives to be as old as her mother, which was 99.
I gardened like whoa yesterday before and after social stuff and am pretty sore today. Local friends came over for breakfast, then we all tromped to my wonderful neighbor S&D's garden to ooo and ah (as far as I'm concerned, it's right up there with the Strybing Arboritum), then to another neighbor's house and hung out for a bit. Someone we know is cloning plants and OMG they are so cool.
The cousin's estate thing is still hot and I'm spending too much time on it while at work, but that's where the computer is. Someone I'm close to asked to borrow $10,000 from me and talked about suicide if she didn't get it and no, she is not serious; yes, i know her very well, this is an old and exhausting pattern that I wish like hell I could break. My wonderful, sweet, talented nephew, who is bipolar & disabled (and over 30; not a child), is having a terrible time of it and we hope we can help get him back on track. He ran away, and someone found him in a field in Lodi, and his parents went down to bring him back to his apt.

Those are the most incompentent deputies since Barney Fife, although honestly, I can't remember much about Barney except what Don Knotts looked and sounded like. The candlepower sitch makes me CRAXY!! Day two of an event where you're shut off from the world, there's a big BBQ to cook the food that's about to go bad -- then everyone leaves the picnic area with road repair flood lights on and candles and lanterns still burning on the tables? Also, they've clearly got the secret Pier 1 candle factory in the basement as well, since everyone is constantly burning groups of pillar candles, even as they wonder how they will survive the winter. I finally accepted that not a single person had ever gone camping or backpacking and hence, couldn't have basic skills that you develop in making do and understanding how to deal with limited resources for heat, light, etc. Then they blew that to hell by having Mayor!Dad, Jake and cute farmboy talk about their many hunting/backpacking trips. ARgh. Also, how is it that so many people have such white white teeth? They could make little shelves to hang on their chests and put candles on those; their teeth are so bright, they could act as reflectors to increase the candlepower. I've finally remembered character Bonnie's name, instead of saying to myself, There's the girlfriend from Weeds! every time I see her. Ditto Richard from Sex in the City. It's nice to see Sprague Grayden again, she of the really terrific name. I don't see why Emily and Jake don't just sit down with Heather and Don or Ron or whatever his name is, and say, listen you two, have you ever thought about dating each other? You'd be perfect for each other!
