Miracle at Speedy Motors: Another in the #1 Ladies Detective Agency series, this time, Mma Ramotswe is searching for a lady's lost family, Mma Makutsi is starting preliminary housekeeping with Puti Radaputi (with disastrous results), and Mr. JLB Matakoni takes Motulele to J'burg for a medical consultation. Lisette Lecat again beautifully narrates, giving each character a different voice and creating a gentle, thoughtful, timeless portrait of Botswawa. I have never read any of this series in print, and never will as long as Ms. Lecat is on the job. Highest recommendation for a book on tape or CD.
The Art of Racing In The Rain: http://www.bookreporter.com/reviews2/9780061537936.asp This is a one-hanky dog book, narrated by Enzo, a thoughtful Labrador. Enzo's human is a male race car driver, so it's filled with information about the world of professional car racing at the same time as Enzo lives, learns, loves, and dies (from the opening paragraphs, the book is a flashback on his life ). I've avoided Marley and Me because I hear it's mawkish; this was not, and it earned my few tears.
I've checked Big Dead Place out of the library and am very much looking forward to reading it. It's about Antarctica and is said to be the best book there is on what's it's like to be there during a winterover.
