Apr. 2nd, 2007 06:30 pmDay off on Friday: ran errands all day, never did get to grocery store, missed connection with workers. Movie 6:30 PM with friends; delivered and repotted Queen's tears for LS.
Sat.: sunbathed briefly while reading (screw the neighbors; if they are offended by my flesh, they shouldn't have cut down all their trees). Got caught behind a fatality on I-80/Bay Bridge, so v. late to memorial service for LK's father. Luckily, it started late. A few of his grad students and fellow physicists flew in from far away, and had very entertaining stories about their days at Cal, Harvard, Los Alamos, U Wash, Lawrence, Sierra camping trips, etc. Wonderful dinner at Bucci afterwards, v. pleasant, lovely toasts to Brook's memory. Drove widow and her neighbor home; stayed, talked; nagged a bit (I'm an extra daughter some of the time). Home by bedtime.
Sun.: Neighbor D did zen master pruning of my sad neglected yet watered potted Japanese maple in the AM and now it looks fabulous in the new pretty pot I bought for it. Connected with workers finally. We 3 each did 6 hours each of yard work: fixed all the lattice Java shredded climbing it; cleared out more ivy; trimmed cotoneaster down more; Mom popped in & I repotted her plants also. LK showed up out of the blue and hung out talking while I cleaned up yard, showered, and dressed before leaving for dinner & movie at GP's. Hard to believe we've known each other 25 years now.
Book: Special Topics in Calamity Physics. I love the title. I like the book more now that I'm done with it than I did while reading it. Some of the writing is brilliant and some irritating and high schoolish - though it's set in high school, so of course it's high schoolish. It could have been shorter.
Book on CD/Tape: The Tender Bar. It's a wonderful audiobook. The reader is terrific and I love the tone of this memoir about this Irish boy growing up in Manhasset, Long Island, in a town where the most important bar is at one end of the main street and the church at the other. He's never maudlin or self-important. It contains possibly the funniest losing-virginity story I've ever heard, which takes place on Supersition Mt. outside of Phoenix/Scottsdale.
