Postcard Notes at 3 AM - This trip to Hawaii was alot of fun. The
weather in the middle of the week wasn't the greatest, but the bookend
weekends were gorgeous. Things done:
- hiked the Crater Rim trail down and across the Kilauea Iki Crater, which is still steaming from molten lava waaaay down below.
- picked up Katerinabead
- Went snorkeling
- Chatted with District Attorney cops over breakfast in Waimea
- Went to Waipio overlook
- Went to Hilo and Hawaiian Acres and talked with kama'ainas.
- Drove all around the Chain of Craters road in the pouring rain. Walked to several overlooks. Got soaked. Couldn't see the whole crater, boo. The lava is flowing right now (apparently we just missed a waterfall of lava into the ocean from the Pu'u vent) but it's just too hard to do unless you're staying nearby, which we weren't.
- Swam the length of Hapuna Beach and walked back
- Had dinner at Roy's
- Went to Lulu's a couple of times.
- Shopped (yeah, baby, fuel that economy!) including getting some good deals at thrift shops.
- Got rained on; got cold
- Snorkeled and swam, with turtles in the early AM. Then, the topper: a 5-5.5 foot shark swim to the left and under me while snorkeling by myself at Haunaunau this afternoon. Yikes! I immediately swam to the nearest other snorkeler, who started looking for it with me, yay. Oh, and I almost stepped on a turtle getting in the water on my last snorkeling stop of the day ::sob:: 13 hours ago.
