HerselfNY said this: I love socializing, but at a certain point my Only Child Brain seizes up and says "must crawl off alone somewhere or else break down entirely," and I can only obey.
I love it! I'm the same way, only I always thought about it in terms of being antisocial or inept socially (well, I am that, too). It's exactly as Herself said, though. I have found that 'parallel play' will get me through being with people, usually pleasantly so, and especially so if it's an outdoorsy activity. Technically, I'm not an only child, since I have 3 siblings, but the others are older, one of them so much older that my first memory of her is visiting her in college when I was a wee thing.
