Aug. 25th, 2008 06:32 pmWeekend update: Biking and swimming make me very happy. I popped over to Gina's condo pool on Sat. and Sun. and swam 30 laps on Sat. and 20 on Sunday. Biked to Sun Valley, to Mom's, to grocery store, back to my place on Sat. Gina and I biked from Blackie's Pasture to Tiburon point on Sun., had breakfast on the dock of the Swiss Chalet, enjoying being in the sun while the fog tube over SF kept us cool. Then to the Art Festival, biked back. The Recyclery in San Rafael is a non-profit that runs bike trips for underprivileged kids and trains kids to repair bikes. It's a wonderful resource. Gina bought a helmet and had her bike adjusted to fit her better. I had regular pedals put on the Stumpjumper that my sister "gave" me (e.g., left at my house then marked as a credit towards her debt to me). I don't think I like the bike - I have to stretch my arms really far out and up front - but a few turns around a parking lot aren't a fair trial. I'll do a longer ride on it and see.
I need to start reading dictionaries. To keep track of the # of laps I swim, and stave off boredom, I count laps by the alphabet. I've run through spices/food/cooking, animals (several times), human anatomy, artist/painters, and I need a better vocabulary. It's appalling how hard it can be. I have a hard time thinking of subjects when I get it the water. Must remember topics: book titles, authors, tv shows, tv characters, movies, music.
I'm really enjoying Carolyn Jessup's biography Escaped. She leaves the Fundamentalist LDS sect and her husband Merrill Jessup with her 8 (!!) kids in the first few pages of the book, then goes back and leads up to it. I'm only on Disk 3. She's been married off at 18 (with 2 days notice, during which time, she was never left alone lest she bolt) as 4th wife to a 51-yr. old man she barely knows, and is succeeding in going to community college (so far).
